This 3 month project involved meeting with 48 artists to discuss and implement the "Plus One" Theory - authored by the artist.
This theory begins by imagining that a work of art is a houseguest invited into the life of the artist. Like with any guest, a proper host is responsible for ensuring the comfort and care of that visitor. The host might ask: Who or what am I inviting to stay with me? How long will they stay? Where will they sleep? How will they impact my relationship to my home and my loved ones? What boundaries should be in place? How will the personality and language of this visitor influence the structure of my daily life? As an extension, during an exhibition, publication or performance of that work, I imagine that the event is much like a party to which the artist brings their plus-one, their work. They introduce that work to the community and are responsible for promoting an exchange. The artist could ask: what do the plus-one and audience have in common? Do they share the same language? Do they want the same things? Can they connect without my participation? Do they endanger one another? Are they open to being changed by the others presence?
