Performance: The artist offers a participant a slice of apple pie. In order to receive the pie, the participant must contract the an act following enjoyment and consumption: throw the ceramic dish against the wall until it breaks. Once the plate is broken, the artist collects a shard from that individual's plate and places it into a ziplock bag with a recipe card which contains the following information:
SIDE A:
A former patient, treated for acute post-partum depression 18 months ago, is awaiting her first appearance in court today. I received a call from her current therapist on Sunday, November 1st 2009, requesting a consultation regarding a blackout the patient suffered several days prior. The patient, while sitting at the dinner table with her mother, her infant child asleep in the next room, reputedly threw her plate against the wall, picked up a shard and began stabbing her mother in the chest. Her mother has been in the ICU until this morning. She has survived the attack but due to her condition has been unable to describe the events. My former patient did not recall what happened, except that she came-to, saw her mother was bleeding and unconscious, then called an ambulance. Her current therapist asked for assistance in restoring the patients memory of that evening. I responded by asking the patient what she and her mother were eating at the time. The patient answered: apple pie. I then requested that her therapist ask for her mothers apple pie recipe. Through the process of recalling the recipe, the patients memories returned. As this session was recorded, I obtained her mothers recipe and used it to bake these pies.
SIDE B:
Ingredients: -Jiffy crust mix (enough for top and bottom) -graham crackers -1/2 cup white sugar -1/4 cup light brown sugar (packed) -2 tablespoons cinnamon -a dash of powdered clove -a dash of nutmeg -a dash of salt -4-5 large apples -1 stick of butter -1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract -1/4 cup of raisins
For crust: use jiffy crust mix and follow instructions listed on the box. Push crushed graham crackers into the bottom crust once it has been laid into the pie plate.
Slice apples as thinly as possible and soak in a bowl of cold water and lemon juice (about half a lemon). In a separate bowl, mix white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and salt.
Arrange sliced apples in a tight layer on the bottom crust. Pinch butter into flake and distribute across apple layer. Dust apples and butter with sugar & spice mixture to cover surface. Repeat this process until the pie plate is heaping. Sprinkle pie with vanilla extract and cover top with raisins. Cover with top crust shell, fork edges and puncture surface.
