The Act: a. Taught viewers traditional suturing on slit grapefruit slices b. Asked public to speak their medical history into the fruit c. Placed slices in mouth d. Ripped sutures out e. Pressed out juice f. Removed remaining pulp g. Swallowed
This interactive performance involved two stations: mending and consumption. At station 1, viewers were taught how to suture while using a slit grapefruit slice and traditional medical materials. During the suturing lesson, the viewers were asked to discuss any previous physical trauma or exposure to the suturing process. At station 2, the blindfolded and restrained performer was fed the mended slice, the sutures were removed and she used her mouth to squeeze out the juice before the remaining pulp was retrieved and placed on a table.
